Japan's Businesses Need Anger Management

"Anger has been an understudied emotion...the literature base is small, there are no anger diagnostic categories and psychology textbooks rarely mention anger."

Japanese Business and Industry Need Anger Management

Japan is not generally identified as society froth with any significant problems in interpersonal conflicts. However, recent reports in the Japan Times Online suggest that there are serious morale problems in the workplace leading to interpersonal conflicts as well as company sabotage.

Currently, Japan has a critical shortage of workers for all job categories. This labor shortage has lead to many workers being forced to work long hours to make up for the shortage of workers. As a consequence, employees are exhibiting evidence of stress, anger, depression, anxiety and inappropriate behavior in relation to their work and problems with their families. Many workers complain that Japanese society has deteriorated with the ending of the lifetime employment system and the replacement of seniority-based promotion systems with ones based on performance.

Human Resource Management Companies are showing an interest in introducing American based anger management/executive coaching into Japanese business and industry. Anderson & Anderson are currently in negations with Consultants Japan Company based in Kobe City, Japan.
Consultants Japan Company will become the exclusive Anderson & Anderson Affiliate for all of Japan.

VALPARAISO | A woman attending anger management classes became irate during a Wednesday morning class, threatened to kill a classmate, then went out to the lobby and broke a display case, Valparaiso police said.

Teresa Prenderville, 32, of 2956 Brown St., Portage, was arrested on charges of intimidation and criminal mischief.
The disturbance occurred at 11:10 a.m. Wednesday at Porter-Starke Services, located at 610 Wall St. in Valparaiso.

The specialist in the meeting room told police a 26-year-old man walked in and asked Prenderville if the seat next to her was taken. The specialist told police Prenderville immediately started yelling to the man, "I'm going to put a cap in you and send you to heaven."

Prenderville is accused of repeating the threat several times -- causing the man to become visibly shaken and start crying. She is also accused of threatening another client before storming out of the room.

A staff member told police Prenderville grabbed a plastic display from the lobby counter and threw it, breaking it. The staff member stated Prenderville then punched the display case at the front door, bending the door frame and damaging the glass. The damage is $200.

Prenderville, who was located walking away from the facility, told police she became angry because a man was making fun or her. The staff and the man, however, said he only asked to sit near her.

Police reports state Prenderville does not have a mental disability or illness, but does have a behavior problem. Police said she had to be placed in a restraint chair at Porter County Jail.

EP doctor must enroll in anger management

Friday, April 14, 2006

The Texas Medical Board in Austin ordered El Paso doctor Luis E. Linan to enroll in an anger management course within one year. The board issued the order after reviewing a complaint that he slapped a surgical assistant on the hand, according to board documents.

Linan, 45, an obstetrics and gynecology specialist, agreed to the order. The complaint stemmed from an incident during a 2004 emergency Caesarean section. "During the very stressful surgery, (Linan) slapped (the assistant) on the hand," documents stated.

The El Pasoan was one of 59 doctors statewide the board has disciplined since its February board meeting, board spokeswoman Jill Wiggins said Thursday.

Emotional Intelligence in Managing Anger

Importance of Emotional Intelligence in Managing Anger

There are five basic competencies that comprise the field of Emotional Intelligence. The first three are Intra-personal, that is they are invisible to others and occur inside of us. The last two are inter-personal that is they occur between us and other people and are observable in our behavior. The better developed your intra-personal skills; the easier it is to demonstrate your inter-personal skills.
1. Emotional Self-Awareness – Having the skills to focus your attention on your emotional state. Being aware, in-the-moment, of what you're feeling. Are you happy, excited, worried, or angry? Given that information about your emotional state, what should (or shouldn't) you do or say next? Use that information to help you make effective decisions to achieve better outcomes for yourself and others.
2. Emotional Self-Regulation – Having the skill to be able to choose the emotions you want to experience, rather than being the victim of whatever emotions occur. Not letting others "push your buttons." Possessing the ability to manage your emotional state. Do not confuse this with "burying” or "stuffing" your feelings. The skill to choose the emotions you want – typically to be able to transform negative draining emotional states into positive productive ones.
3. Emotional Self-Motivation – The ability to use your emotions to cause yourself to take positive action, to continue to persistently pursue goals even in the face of significant adversity or difficulty. This is about using your emotions to be positive, optimistic, confident, and persistent rather than negative, pessimistic and second guessing yourself and your decisions.
4. Empathy – Not to be confused with sympathy. Possessing the ability to listen effectively and accurately enough to put yourself in the other person's shoes. Not to necessarily agree with them, but to truly understand the situation from their point of view in order to improve communication, problem-solving, and trust.
5. Nurturing Relationships – The ability to demonstrate sincere care (as contrasted with "required courtesy") for others. Through word and deed, demonstrate appreciation for people's efforts and contribution. Setting a positive tone of cooperation no matter how difficult the situation or conversation. Having other's best interests in mind while focusing on achieving goals to create win-win outcomes.
All of the above information is a part of Danial Goleman’s “Emotional Intelligence at work and are incorporated into the Anderson & Anderson model of Anger Management.

10 Mistakes Before Success

Ten Mistakes We Made Before We Hit It Big In Anger Management

1. We spent $10.000 for one ad in the Los Angeles Magazine which generated three crank calls and one complaint.
2. We lost $8,000 dollars on a website designer who convinced us to permit him to host our site and later removed the site from the internet.
3. We hired three Office Managers without checking their references.
4. I signed an agreement with Pitney Bowls for the rental of a stamp machine ordered by my bookkeeper without my knowledge. The equipment sat unopened for over a year.
5. We failed to monitor two employees who stole thousands of dollars from us.
6. We were forced to close an office which we could have sold for $60,000.
7. We drafted and signed two contracts without using an attorney which resulted in a substantial financial loss.
8. We permitted a colleague to share an office and list himself as a partner. This mistake resulted in a legal action against Anderson & Anderson.
9. When our gross income yearly income reached one million dollars, we beginning giving large bonuses to our employees conditions.
10. We hired a family member who almost caused us to lose our business.

Anger Management in Our World Today

Anger Management is a growing service in our world today. Due to a marked increase in people acting out their thoughts and emotions, the need for anger management has never been greater. More and more people have come to realize that they are out of control. Therefore, anger management is the first step in taking personal responsibility for your actions.

No longer does anger management give off stereotypes of everyone being forced (court ordered) to attend. In fact, our program has three times as many volunteers as court ordered due to the fact that the program delivers results. Those results give confidence for others to see the value of anger management in other settings. This is probably the most distinguishing factor between Anderson and Anderson and the competitors.

Mr. Anderson’s program is based on stress management, communication, and most importantly-emotional intelligence. This makes it highly adaptable to any situation where anger is involved. Unlike many other programs that really follow a counseling model, his program demands that you take responsibility and stop blaming others. I have found this to be highly useful in cases where couples with children are divorcing. By focusing on their emotional intelligence, couples can see that they have developed automatic thoughts that are viewed as negative, thereby rendering communication as a battle. Couples can break down the barriers to compromise and truly focus on their new goal; co-parenting, when they are able to listen without prejudice. The use of the Conover Assessment identifies areas where these barriers to communication exist. Mr. Anderson stresses the importance of identifying their needs and providing clients the ability to gain control of themselves.

Sound and Fury

Sound and Fury
I’ve only heard the Business Shrink raise his voice once, and that was off-air, when he was on a business call right before the show. It turned out at issue was a high-stakes deal which could have meant “seven figures up or down” for his bottom line. But he was able to manage his anger well enough to pull it together seconds before airtime and host a compelling show. Peter Morris prides himself on his emotional self-management, so it should be fascinating to hear him compare notes with the one of the nation’s leading anger management gurus, George Anderson, tomorrow. According to a recent LA Times profile “Anderson has practically cornered the market on anger management training in Southern California, establishing himself as the dead-calm center of a swirling world of volatile hotheads, sputtering short-fusers, temperamental teeth-clenchers—the whole menagerie of people whose outbursts often bring them, eventually, into a rational and lucrative world Anderson helped create.”
