On-line Bogus Anger management Programs, the Latest Internet Scam

Unscrupulous self-trained anger management providers who are marketing on-line anger management classes are duping an unsuspecting public and some Judges. These Internet entrepreneurs are exploiting the lack of state or federal standards for anger management or life coaching.

Many of these programs provide impressive certificates of completion for a fee of $45, with no requirements for any involvement in learning skills to control anger. It is ultimately the community that is the real loser in this type of victimization.

Many local courts are overwhelmed with infractions and misdemeanor cases, which order defendants to participate in anger management programs.At best, the courts can only spend between three and five minutes for each case. Consequently, there is little time to question the legitimacy of online anger management programs. The California Superior Courts do not accept online anger management classes for road rage or similar offenses.

The Missing Link in the JCAHO “Disruptive Physician” Standards

Healthcare organizations nationwide, through their Physician Well-Being Committees and Credentialing Committees, are searching for appropriate resources to refer physicians who are considered to exhibit “disruptive behavior” at work. Unfortunately, the needed missing link is a directory or list of “approved programs” designed exclusively to address this issue.

Doctors are a highly trusted and valued group of professionals in all cultures. They enjoy social respect, but also have significant social responsibilities. Doctors who fail to maintain professional standards and conduct cause social concern, because they may do harm to patients if their performance is poor. The loss of a doctor has effects on service provision, and may be expensive to health care providers.

Doctors may fail to perform well for a number of reasons. Stress related problems, depression and substance misuse are known to be commoner among doctors than other similar professional groups. One particular manifestation of poor performance has been described as “disruptive” behavior or unprofessional conduct. These are situations where physicians are unhelpful, rude, or even abusive.

Intimidating and disruptive behaviors can foster medical errors, contribute to poor patient satisfaction, increase the cost of care, and cause qualified clinicians, administrators and managers to seek new positions in more professional environments. Safety and quality of patient care is dependent on teamwork and communication. To assure quality and to promote a culture of safety, health care organizations must address the problem of behaviors that threaten the performance of the health care team.

Below is a list of established organizations which provide assessment, intervention and monitoring of “disruptive physicians”:

Program for Distressed Physicians (Vanderbilt University)

The Center for Professional Health offers a three-day continuing medical education course (CME) to address the specific needs of physicians whose workplace behavior has become problematic. This course combines didactic presentations, role-play with focused feedback, group feedback from peers and colleagues, plus review of workplace/family complaints. Participants will receive training in alternative behaviors and explore cognitive distortions that relate to their problems. The course will focus on the problems identified by specific complaints. The solutions are reinforced by role-play, feedback, testing and group accountability.

An appropriate referral to this course would follow an assessment and evaluation to rule out medical and psychiatric problems. Contact William Swiggart for details.

The three-day Continuing Medical Education course follows an assessment. The course fee is $4000, which includes three follow-up group sessions with course participants facilitated by course faculty. There is no discount for missed follow-up group sessions. Anger Management for Healthcare Professionals Program (UCSD)

This course is designed to help those physicians and healthcare providers who have contributed to a disruptive working environment by way of inappropriate expression of anger. Conflict, stress and disruption in the hospital and clinic setting create low morale, heightened rates of staff turnover, and patient safety concerns.

The Anger Management for Healthcare Professionals program is a small, (6-8 participants), intensive and highly interactive three day course taught by UCSD faculty from the Department of Psychiatry. Participant coursework in the form of self-reported inventories of mood and interpersonal conflict as well as reading is required.

Anderson & Anderson Releases Los Angeles Court Provider List 2009

Anderson & Anderson, Inc., the Trusted Name in Anger Management, has published the updated Los Angeles County Anger Management Court Referral List for January 2009. This list has been sent to the Los Angeles County Superior Court, and all of its branches. This court list will remain in effect through June 2009.

The providers on this list are certified by Anderson & Anderson, and they have done the following: 1.) completed the 40 hour certification training, 2.) use the Conover Assessment and post-tests, and 3.) are using the Anderson & Anderson client workbooks and other Anderson & Anderson training material for their classes.

This court list is updated every six months to reflect the current status of anger management providers in L.A. County. Each court mandated anger management client receives a copy of this list, and he/she can choose which program to enroll in. The providers list, in its web-based form, is available on the Anderson & Anderson website. Hospitals Move Aggressively to Implement New JCAHO “Disruptive Behavior” Policy

Physician Well-Being Committees are seeking legitimate programs with proven track records to refer mandated and voluntary physician clients in need of assessments and intervention for "disruptive behavior". The three oldest and best known programs for "disruptive physicians" are the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine Distressed Physician Program, the PACE Program at the University of California School of Medicine in San Diego, and the Anderson & Anderson Executive Coaching/Anger Management for Physicians™, based in Los Angeles.

In order to facilitate the physician clients’ enrollment into a program for assistance, it is important for the Well-Being Committee to clearly understand how the program works and be able to explain the process in a positive, helpful manner. Highly trained professionals are hypersensitive to being mandated to participate in any intervention, which implies impairment, psychopathology or some type of personality disorder. Therefore, empathy and sensitivity must be used, as well as an ability to explain in detail what will take place, once the physician client has begun the intervention process.

The following are a sample of the types of questions that are posed by physicians who are being referred for assistance:

  • Will this entire process be confidential?
  • Will I be seen individually or in a group?
  • Will I have to undergo a psychiatric exam?
  • Will have to take a battery of psychological tests?
  • What type of assessment will I receive?
  • Will I have to undergo a chemical dependence evaluation?
  • Will I receive counseling, psychotherapy or psychiatric treatment?
  • Does the coaching, classes or intervention include a 360-degree follow-up component?
  • What is the length of the program?
  • Is aftercare included or required?
  • Is there any flexibility in scheduling this assessment and intervention?
  • Can these services be offered on-site?
  • What is the cost of the program?

In view of the fact that the incidence of injury resulting from violent acts is more than twice the incidence for health care workers, compared to other workers, it no surprise that the Health Care Industry is anxious to address these issues (Bureau of Labor 2005). It is also encouraging to see the reception on the part of physicians to this new requirement.

Obama, A Real Life Model Of Emotional Intelligence

As a professional coach with a specialization in Executive Coaching/Anger Management for Physicians™, I work daily to enhance the emotional intelligence skills of high-level professionals. My work is practiced based, which is more similar to the coaching done in professional sports. The opposite of practiced based work is academic, theoretical or psychotherapeutic.

"Emotional intelligence involves the ability to perceive accurately, appraise, and express emotion: the ability to access and or generate feelings when they facilitate thought; the ability to understand emotion and emotional knowledge; and the ability to regulate emotions to promote emotional and intellectual growth." Anger Management Questions and Answers

Q. Are Anger Management Providers, who use the Anderson & Anderson Anger Management model to provide classes and services, trained and/or authorized to provide Executive Coaching/Anger Management for "disruptive physicians"?

A. No organization has the authority or the capacity to provide the trademarked Anderson & Anderson Executive Coaching/Anger Management for "disruptive physicians".

Q. Is there a difference between anger management and domestic violence?

A. Yes, there is a difference. Domestic violence by law - both federal and state - is defined as violence which occurs in an intimate relationship. Anger management is a course for persons who have been involved in an aggressive action towards someone else or destruction of property.

Q. Can the Anderson & Anderson batterers’ intervention program be used for anger management?

A. No. It is only designed to address domestic violence which, by law, must relate to intimate relationships.

Q. If a court orders anger management classes and it is clear that the problem was domestic violence, what should we do?

A. It is not the responsibility of the provider of either batterers’ intervention or anger management to question a legal order of the court.

Q. Can a certified anger management facilitator offer batterers’ intervention classes?

A. No. In California, Penal Code 1203.091 determines the standard for all batterers’ programs in the state. It establishes the Probation Department in each California County as the agency responsible for approving and monitoring all batterers’ programs. Although Anderson & Anderson provides the training necessary for batterers' intervention facilitators, the County determines whether a new facilitator or program can legally offer batterers' intervention in that county.

Q. If I take the Certification Course in anger management, can I certify other providers?

A. No. You are only certified to provide anger management to adults and/or adolescents.

Q. How can I get my program listed on the Anderson & Anderson website?

A. You must first complete the 40-hour training. Then you must purchase the Conover Assessment and a minimum of twenty workbooks. You must then send in your listing information in an e-mail attachment.

Q. Is the Anderson & Anderson 40 hour Anger Management Facilitator Certification accepted in my state?

A. There are no state laws in any state regarding standards for anger management. To date, the Anderson & Anderson model has never been rejected anywhere. Please click here to see the states where we already have providers.

The Rush To Find JCAHO Consistent Programs For Disruptive Physicians

The Sentinel Event Alert provides eleven steps to curb disruptive behavior. These include providing education and training about professional behavior and appropriate interactions with coworkers, creating accountability for maintaining appropriate behavior, establishing a zero tolerance policy for disruptive behaviors (and a means for enforcing this policy), and crafting nonconfrontational methods for reporting and addressing inappropriate behavior.

Many Hospitals and Healthcare Organizations were quick to establish and implement the new JCAHO standards long before the January 2009 deadline.There are three pioneer organizations with extensive experience providing assessment and intervention for "disruptive physicians". These organizations are: The PACE Program at the University of California School of Medicine (San Diego), The Distressed Physician Program at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, and Anderson & Anderson, A.P.C., Executive Coaching/Anger Management Program for disruptive physicians (Los Angeles).

The programs at both the University of California and Vanderbilt University are both full through July of 2009. Both programs limit enrollment to 8 participants per class. These classes are only available four times per year. Anger Management Guru, George Anderson, Brings his Groundbreaking Anger Management Training into 2009

George Anderson, the premier Anger Management Facilitator and Executive Coach, intends to begin 2009 with a bang. He will be hosting the very first Anderson & Anderson anger management training of 2009. The training will take place at his Brentwood Office in Los Angeles, CA on January 28, 29, and 30. The training seminar will include training in work with adolescents, adults, emotional intelligence, marketing and practice expansion (for those who plan to start their own anger management practice utilizing the Anderson & Anderson model), and Motivation to change.

Anger Management vs. Conflict Resolution (Part 2)

Both anger management and conflict resolution are appropriate interventions for interpersonal relationship problems. However, they are clearly different and these differences are essential in determining which to consider in addressing relationship issues.

Conflict resolution is a range of processes aimed at alleviating or eliminating sources of conflict. The term "conflict resolution" is sometimes used interchangeably with the term "dispute resolution" or "alternative dispute resolution". Processes of conflict resolution generally include negotiation, mediation and diplomacy. The processes of arbitration, litigation, and formal complaint processes, such as ombudsman processes, are usually described with the term "dispute resolution", although some refer to them as "conflict resolution". Processes of meditation and arbitration are often referred to as "alternative dispute resolution".

Anger management is a course designed to teach skills in the recognition and management of stress and anger, as well as skill enhancement in assertive communication and emotional intelligence. Anger management must always begin with an assessment designed to determine the clients level of functioning in the above four areas. Anger management can be offered in a small group format or in individual coaching.

In California, Judges routinely refer divorcing couples with minor children to Conciliation Courts for “conflict resolution”. Criminal Courts refer cases of road rage, simple battery and person-directed violence to Court Approved anger management classes for intervention.

A careful review of these two disciplines clearly indicates that Conflict Resolution requires far more training and experience than Anger Management. In fact, many, if not most, experts in this area are practicing Attorneys with special training in Mediation. In contrast, anger management is a much newer area of specialization without the rigorous training and experience requirements of Conflict Resolution.

Finally, Conflict Resolution requires all parties involved in the dispute to participate in the resolution. Anyone can opt to participate in an anger management course and gain from the experience.

How To Brand A Coaching Practice

What is branding?

Simply put, a brand is a promise. By identifying and authenticating a product or service, branding delivers a pledge of satisfaction and quality. In reviewing the websites and Internet ads of numerous Coaching Practices, most appear to be generic or, at best, only differentiated by Life Coaching as opposed to Executive Coaching. Executive coaches are more similar to each other than they are unique. The same is true for most Life Coaches. In other words, they seem to be saying on their websites and ads “me too” in explaining their services.

Why is branding important?

It prevents the danger of being anonymous. Branding provides answers to a lot of clients’ questions, such as:

• Who are you?

• What services do you offer?

• What do you sell?

• How are you different from those offering similar services?

• Why are you better than your competitors?

• Why should I enroll in your program or contract for your services?
