Anderson & Anderson Anger Management Affiliate Program

Anderson & Anderson, A.P.C. will begin offering an affiliate program open to anger management providers who have trained under the Anderson & Anderson model. By signing up for this program, providers will be able to sell all Anderson & Anderson home study training packages, books, and DVDs. The goal of this program is to make Anderson & Anderson products more widely available to the general population. Customers may benefit from ordering our products from providers who are located in their local area.

The primary requirement is that each provider must have a functioning web site, as each provider will be responsible for uploading the products on their web site. Anderson & Anderson will ship ordered products directly from its shipping office. There is no charge for signing up as an affiliate of Anderson & Anderson. The biggest benefit of this program is that each provider who becomes an affiliate will receive 30% of the purchase price for each product that is ordered from their web site. We will have more information about this program once the development process is completed.

Federation of State Physician Health Programs is a Smashing Success

I am representing Anderson & Anderson at the Annual Conferece in New Orleans. The conference has been a real success. I have met Physician Well Being Chair Persons as well as FSPHP Boards members Nationwide.

Programs for Executive Coaching/Anger Management were well represented. This was also a prominent topic of concern for many of the attendees. Many, if not most intervention programs for "disruptive physicians" are based on Emotional Intelligence.

Smokers 'Need Anger Help to Quit'

Smokers should be given anger management lessons to help them give up smoking, a study suggests.

University of California tests on 20 people found nicotine helped calm aggression, but it was more likely from people not wearing nicotine patches.Researchers hypothesised smokers were more likely to be people prone to anger and said tackling this could be a vital part of smoking cessation services.NHS stop smoking services said the research would be considered.

Researchers got the participants to play a computer game - once wearing a nicotine-replacement patch and once using a dummy patch, the Behavioural and Brain Functions journal reported.

"Novel behavioural treatments like anger management training may aid smoking cessation efforts in anger provoking situations that increase withdrawal and tobacco cravings"-- Jean Gehricke, lead researcher

After each round, the players could give their opponent a burst of unpleasant noise at a duration and volume set by them. The study found that when the participants were not wearing the nicotine patch they were more likely to react with aggression. The researchers believe nicotine affects the part of the brain responsible for emotion. They said the smokers who struggled to quit were more likely to be the ones who found it hard to remain calm, and ended up turning to a cigarette to soothe them. One in four people currently smokes in the UK - a figure that has remained fairly constant in recent years after decades of falling rates.

Cravings

Lead researcher Jean Gehricke said: "Novel behavioural treatments like anger management training may aid smoking cessation efforts in anger-provoking situations that increase withdrawal and tobacco cravings." NHS stop smoking services use a combination of nicotine replacement therapies and counselling to help people give up, but not anger management sessions. A spokesman for the Department of Health, which oversees NHS stop smoking services, said: "We will look at this research." But he added that NHS services were already proving successful."Smokers are up to four times more likely to quit successfully with NHS support and there are 150 NHS stop smoking services around the country."

Another Change in the Broadcast of the Good Morning America Segment

I regret to inform you all that the broadcast of our anger management segment that is scheduled to appear on Good Morning America has been postponed. Mr. Anderson informed me that one of the producers of the show explained to him that the show will likely air next weekend, but she is not sure of which date. We were initially told that it would air today. I do apologize for the confusion. We will update everyone when we have the definitive date. Thank You.

Anger Management Guru, George Anderson, To Appear on ABC’s Good Morning America

On April 21, 2009, the producers of Good Morning America from ABC News sent a film crew to record an interview about “Venting” and Anger Management, given by premier anger management guru, George Anderson, and conducted by ABC News Correspondent Brian Rooney.

The internationally recognized Anderson & Anderson Anger Management Model will be featured on the Good Morning America News Show on Saturday, April 25, 2009 at 7:00 am (the program will air during the 7:00 am hour in all local ABC News Broadcasting affiliates in the United States). George Anderson, LCSW, CAMF was contacted by an ABC News Producer from Good Morning America/Weekend Edition in regards to the concept of “Venting” as it relates to anger management. According to the producer, everyone who she contacted advised her to call Mr. George Anderson of Anderson & Anderson, A.P.C. After their conversation, Mr. Anderson agreed to allow a film crew from Good Morning America to film two segments in his office: An interview between himself and Mr. Brian Rooney, the ABC News Correspondent from Good Morning America, and a small anger management group facilitated by Mr. Anderson.

The group consisted of willing participants who were filmed for the purposes of showing an accurate portrayal of a typical Anderson & Anderson anger management group. Each participant explained why they were attending an anger management class. They described their level of functioning in the following emotional skills relative to their scores on the assessment: Interpersonal Assertion, Empathy, Stress Management, Interpersonal Aggression, Interpersonal Deference, and Personal Change Orientation. Mr. Anderson provided each participant feedback and a review of the contrasting wheels of behavior (negative vs. positive behaviors).

Anderson & Anderson has been providing anger management classes for mandated and volunteer clients for the past 18 years. Anyone can call and ask Mr. Anderson questions about this event or anything related to anger management.

Current Trends in JCAHO "Disruptive Physician" Referrals

Many Hospitals and Healthcare Organizations are still struggling to mandate reluctant physicians to attend programs that address and help change "disruptive behavior". Change seems difficult for an established, long standing practice of remaining silent in the presence of "disruptive behaviors".

Here are some of the obstacles of implementing the new JCAHO standards:

·Threats of lawsuits from affected physicians

·Potential loss of income from high producing specialists

·Lack of standards from Disruptive Physician Providers

·Unavailability of an Approved National Provider list for use by physician well-being committees, administrators and other mandated referrals

·The limitation of the two recognized national providers of mandated resources for physicians: The PACE Program at the University of California at San Diego and The Vanderbilt University Distressed Physician Program.

According to the New York Times, the new JCAHO "disruptive physician" mandate has created a "Cottage Industry" of psychologists and on-line anger management providers with no training or experience in providing assessment and intervention for disruptive physicians.

Finally, the anger management programs at Vanderbilt and UCSD are already full for 2009. A National Provider List of Resources for Disruptive Physicians can be found by clicking here: http://www.scribd.com/doc/11938908/Nationwide-Directory-of-Resources-for-Disruptive-Physicians

Alternative Uses of Anger Management

By

George Anderson, MSW, BCD, CAMF

The Family courts in Huntsville, Alabama are proactive in addressing the issue of anger exhibited by divorcing couples with children. All divorcing couples who have children are mandated to attend a course designed to lower their anger and show them some of the effects of their behavior on their children. They are also given information on how their children might be affected by this action. However, some parents continue to argue, continue to involve their children in the conflict, and show no signs of having the ability to co-parent. Thousands of dollars are spent on attorneys due to the anger, causing even more issues.

The Conflict Resolution Program was developed by Mr. Frank Morales, MS, CAMF, who is the Director of Conflict Resolution Programs, Family Services Center of Huntsville, Alabama. This program was developed to deal with the issues mentioned above. It is a combination of anger management, negotiation, mediation, and stress management. It is not therapy and is very focused and directive in nature. It is a matter of finding compromise for the family, taking personal responsibility, enforcing court documents, keeping one’s ego out of decision making and, finally, living the line "loving your children more than you love being right".

The internationally recognized Anderson & Anderson Batterer’s Intervention and Anger Management Curricula serves as the assessment and intervention components of these programs.

As a result of this program, we have seen an increase in the numbers volunteer clients who wish to avoid court hearings.

The Anderson & Anderson Anger Management Model to be demonstrated on Good Morning America

George Anderson will be interviewed after presenting a group session using the internationally recognized Anderson & Anderson Anger Management Model. We will announce the date of the airing as soon as we have it.

Managed Health Care is Not a Viable Option for Success in Private Practice

Many new psychotherapists begin their practices excited over the prospect of earning a stable income from providing psychotherapy as a provider under managed health care. Within the first year, they quickly realize that this option is fraught with obstacles.

The following factors are some of the real keys to success: The most important key is competence in a narrow area of practice. Clinicians who want, and try to, do everything are doomed to failure. If is far better to seek Post Graduate Training or Certification in a niche area that is not crowded.

Examples are anger management, organizational development, executive coaching, behavioral intervention, for special needs children and development disability intervention.

Practice location determines your client population. If your practice is located in a modest income-community, your income will be modest at best. If you locate in an upscale area, the chances of a higher income will increase.

Select and pay for consultation from someone who has demonstrated that they are achieving or have achieved success in private practice. Most of the people who claim to teach others how to get rich in private practice have really never succeeded in their own right.

Any intervention that can be provided in a group format is far more income sensitive than an intervention offered on an individual basis. Here is a simple and true example: In our Brentwood Office, we offer anger management in a small group of 10 participants on Saturdays. This is an accelerated class which lasts for 8 hours. Each participant pays $30 for the client work-book, $90 for the assessment, and $50 per hour for the full day class. On average, that earns us $5000 minus the cost of the books for just one day. We do this each Saturday and the income is predictable.

On December 15, I provided four hours of training in emotional intelligence for 50 physicians from a major Health Maintenance Organization. I received $10,000 for this training.

Finally, your practice must be treated like any other business, which means you must borrow money to operate on at least a year without depending on income from your practice.

Anger Management in Corporate Training

I work for a service sector company, and with the recession in place, we began looking for ways to hold on to our customer base during these hard times. A committee of corporate and field management was assembled and we began looking at ways to improve our process and training to enhance the skills of our service teams.

During one of the meetings, we began laying out objectives for the training, and one of our Regional Managers suggested that many of our Service Management personnel could use Anger Management. Half of the group looked at the Regional Manager as if he was crazy, but after he explained his position the rest of the group agreed. So I committed to researching curriculum for the subject.

Of course I found so many references to Anderson and Anderson when I began researching on the internet that I naturally gravitated toward this curriculum and took the steps to get certified.

I have since been facilitating a four-hour introduction of Anger Management to our Service Management team to the amount of about 40 participants per month. We have them take the short version of the Conover Assessment the day before, then we go through the book using an outline that builds in discussions and interactive exercises.

When my guys hear that they are going to learn about Anger Management, they usually snicker and joke and say they don’t need it. But almost invariably, it becomes one of the most well received portions of our class. Almost every one tells me afterward that they enjoyed the segment and that they found something they could use. Many of the participants have even said that the introspection created by the course is somewhat invigorating.

I think one thing that resonates with the class is that there is something for everyone, even if a particular participant does not believe he or she has an anger problem. All of our managers work under pressure, so the stress management portion is relevant to each of them. And because we communicate with our customers, bosses, and employees everyday, the segment on assertive communication is very helpful.

Probably the most important part of the class for all of our guys is the segment on emotional intelligence. We have taught our people for years that we need to empathize with our customers when they are upset. However, saying "I understand…" has become so systematic with our folks that the sincerity has been lost. So reinforcing that we need to truly try to put ourselves in the customer’s place and read their body language, as well as listen to their words, is extremely useful in the real world. To drive the point home, we go through the exercise of showing 4 silent video clips provided by Anderson & Anderson, and ask the class to explain what they think is happening in each scenario. It is pleasantly surprising to see how often they get it right, just by reading body language and watching facial expressions. I believe that this is one of the most powerful exercises in the class.

As for results, I recently met with the General Manager of one of our branches and he gave me some very positive feedback from the Service Management classes. And one of the things he specified was that a particular District Manager of his definitely benefitted from the Anger Management segment. He had seen results almost immediately upon his return.

I think there are people in the workforce that don’t know that the way they act is simply inappropriate. By making them aware of the dangers of out of control anger and the perceptions of others, it helps them see themselves in a different light.

If you would like a copy of the outline we use, I can send it to you, or George Anderson also has an electronic copy of it. If you would like further discussions on corporate training of this subject, please respond to this posting.

Everyone Can Benefit From Anger Management and Executive Coaching

While anger management has rapidly become a household term, the public still has a limited understanding of what anger management is and what it encompasses. As a consequence of this limited knowledge, many celebrities, athletes and other high profile persons incorrectly claim to have taken certified anger management classes. They are instead referring to counseling, psychotherapy or spiritual guidance for the treatment of anger.

What is anger management?

According to the American Psychiatric Association, anger is a normal human emotion. It is not a mental disorder; therefore, the condition is not responsive to counseling, psychotherapy or psychotropic medication. Additionally anger is not listed in the Manual of Nervous and Mental Disorders.

Anger is considered to be a problem under the following conditions:

• When it is too intense
• When it occurs too frequently
• When it lasts too long
• When it leads to health issues
• When it destroys interpersonal relationships
• When it results in person-directed aggression

Anger Management should be offered in a group or individual coaching format. The groups or individual coaching sessions should be designed to teach skills in the four domains of emotional intelligence: self-awareness, self-control, social-awareness and relationship management.

Anger assessment

All professional anger management courses begin with a non-psychiatric assessment that is designed to assess the level of competence in recognizing and managing anger, recognizing and managing stress, communication skills, and the degree to which the participant is empathic and motivated to change.

Anger management intervention

Once a Certified Anger Management Facilitator has administered the assessment to the client and provided an intake interview, he or she gives the client a client workbook and the first assignment prior to entrance into the group or the individual coaching session.

In contrast to the small group classes for anger management clients, Executive Coaching/Anger Management is more intense. It contains three assessments rather than one, two client workbooks, and a DVD that provides a quick reference to the entire program.

All participants are given a Post-test following the completion of the intervention to determine the success of the program. The post-test determines skill enhancements in self-awareness, self-control, social-awareness and relationship-management.

Secrets of Success in Teaching & Providing Anger Management

Anger management is now the most lucrative source of income generated from part-time practice for Anderson & Anderson Certified Anger Management Facilitators. In our current Managed Healthcare environment, income for psychotherapists of all disciplines is extremely low.

Certified Anger Management Facilitators are quietly making real income by teaching anger management for three days or 12 hours per week. There are no comparable potential income streams for counselors, teachers, and psychotherapists.

Here are 10 secrets of financial success for new Certified Anger Management facilitators and providers:

  1. Enroll in the three-day live Anderson & Anderson Anger Management Facilitator Certification training scheduled for May 6th, 7th & 8th in Los Angeles.
  2. Purchase all of the related ancillary instructional material for use with the Anderson & Anderson curriculum.
  3. Select a conveniently located Doubletree Inn or comparable hotel. Secure a conference room large enough for 12 persons. Negotiate a reasonable price to use this conference room 8 hours on Saturdays and 2 hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
  4. Find a reliable webmaster and pay to have him/her develop your new website (if you do not already have a functioning web site). Go to http://www.wordpress.com/ and develop a simple, functional website/blog. Make sure that the information on your site is kept current.
  5. Join Linkedin (http://www.linkedin.com/) and sign up for one or all three Anderson & Anderson Anger Management Groups for Providers. Invite all of the current members of these groups to join your Linkedin network.
  6. Place a free ad on the Anger Management Resource Directory at http://www.anger-management-resources.org/.
  7. Pay the nominal fee of $39 per month be listed on the Anderson & Anderson website.
  8. Get the names, e-mail addresses and mailing addresses of all Human Resource Managers representing companies of 50 employees or more. Send information about your practice along with business cards.
  9. Send out free Press Releases announcing the opening of your practice.
  10. Create a weblink between your web site and the web sites of all the anger management facilitators/providers featured on our web site (http://www.andersonservices.com/). You can find the web site addresses of providers by clicking on the "Certified Providers" tab near the top of the home page, and then clicking on "By US State" on the following page that loads.

Three providers who have been successful in using this model are Capital Anger Management (http://www.capitolangermgt.com/), Nevada Anger Management (http://www.nevadaangermanagement.com/), and Anger Management Institute of Texas(http://www.ami-tx.com/). If you aggressively market your services and provide quality classes consistent with the Anderson & Anderson Curriculum, your chances for success will be good.
