Anger Management Increases Popularity

Persons who are adept at self-control, assertive communication, empathy and stress management are walking advertisements for Anger Management. If you think for one moment of the people who you perfer to be with, generally, you will select persons who make you feel, wanted, cared for and listened to. Essentially, we tend to prefer to be in the presence of people who are Emotionally Intelligent. Emotional Intelligence is the capacity to sense the needs and feeling of others by sheer oberservation and to use this information in a manner to produce a
win-win situation for you and the other person. These are skills that motivated persons can learn and master at any point in his or her life. In contrast to IQ, EQ has no limits and is never static. Currently, Anger Mangement is the most direct way to acquire skills in emotional intelligence.

Disruptive Physician Services are Expanded to Include Organizational Anger Management

Hospitals and Health Care Agencies are moving aggresively to address the issue of “disruptive physician” behavior. In addition to Executive Coaching/Anger Management for mandated physician clients, proactive prevention is rapidly becoming one of the most popular interventions currently being requested for this population. Organizational Anger Management can be customized to meet the needs of the requesting agency. Interventions can be provided in small groups or conference type format. This training can be designed for between one and eight hours. In addition to power point presentations, ancilary DVD's, client workbooks as well as Post Tests can be included to document the usefulness of this training. This new proactive intervention is similar to the type of training designed for “sexual harrassment” in it’s focus on prevention. It is supported by Physician Well-Being Committees, Corporate Attorneys, Hospital Executives and Risk Management Officers.

Premier Providers of Executive Coaching/Anger Management for Physicians

Healthcare organizations nationwide, through their Physician Well-Being Committees and Credentialing Committees, are searching for appropriate resources to refer physicians who are exhibiting “disruptive behavior” at work. Unfortunately, the needed missing link is a directory or list of approved programs designed exclusively to address this issue.Doctors are a highly trusted and valued group of professionals in all cultures. They enjoy social respect, but also have significant social responsibilities. Doctors who fail to maintain professional standards and conduct cause social concern, because they may do harm to patients, if their performance is poor. The loss of a doctor has effects on service provision, and may be expensive to health care providers. Doctors may fail to perform well for a number of reasons. Stress related problems, depression and substance abuse are known to be more common among doctors than other similar professional groups. One particular manifestation of poor performance has been described as “disruptive” behavior or unprofessional conduct. These are situations where physicians are unhelpful, rude, or even abusive. Intimidating and disruptive behaviors can foster medical errors, contribute to poor patient satisfaction, increase the cost of care, and cause qualified clinicians, administrators and managers to seek new positions in more professional environments. Safety and quality of patient care is dependent on teamwork and communication. To assure quality and to promote a culture of safety, health care organizations must address the problem of behaviors that threaten the performance of the health care team.

Below is a list of established organizations that provide assessment, intervention and monitoring of “disruptive physicians”:

Program for Distressed Physicians (Vanderbilt University) The Center for Professional Health offers a three-day continuing medical education course (CME) to address the specific needs of physicians whose workplace behavior has become problematic. This course combines didactic presentations, role-play with focused feedback, group feedback from peers and colleagues, plus review of workplace/family complaints. Participants will receive training in alternative behaviors and explore cognitive distortions that relate to their problems. The course will focus on the problems identified by specific complaints. The solutions are reinforced by role-play, feedback, testing and group accountability. An appropriate referral to this course would follow an assessment and evaluation to rule out medical and psychiatric problems. Contact William Swiggart for details. The three-day Continuing Medical Education course follows an assessment. The course fee is $4000, which includes three follow-up group sessions with course participants facilitated by course faculty. Vanderbilt University School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for CME to sponsor continuing medical education for physicians. For more details and explanations of course material and assessments

Pros and Cons of small group vs. individual sessions for “Disruptive Physicians” and other High Profile Clients.

One of the fundamental choices available to coaching clients is one-on-one coaching versus a small group course. There are many differences between these types of coaching and in the type of experiences you will have with each. However, both types of coaching have a lot to offer; the choice should be made on where you will get the maximum benefit and offers best learning experience.

What Individual Coaching for Physicians and High Profile Clients Offer

Individual coaching is based around a strong relationship between the coach and the individual, and demands a strong interaction between both parties. It includes a great deal of “face time,” often in both the office and via phone contacts. The complete experience is very much a free flow of information to and skill enhancement exercises for the individual and should be designed to be highly focused on the participants needs. Confidentiality is considered to be more secure.

At times the individual coaching experience can seem a little overwhelming because the attention of the coach is fixed firmly on the client but this is what’s needed for the end result to fully develop your skills sets in self-aware, self-control, social awareness and relationship management. These are the core topics of coaching for disruptive behavior.

Executive Group Coaching and Its Benefits

Conversely the use of group coaching offers a very different experience. Joining a group allows each individual to experience a shared experience. And while the techniques and tools used by most coaches will be very similar, individuals not only are aware of how the coaching affects them; they also get to see how it’s affecting other group members. Role playing and peer-supported learning has a number of benefits; it provides a less pressured environment and the group often becomes an extended support network to reinforce the lessons and tools first introduced by the coach. Confidentiality is perceived to be less secure especially among well known surgeons and Medical School Professors.

In Conclusion, Well-Being Committees and Administrators who mandate or refer Physicians, Attorneys and High Profile clients to mandated coaching should be aware of the concerned of those who are candidates for coaching. Individual vs. small group coaching should be carefully explored with the participants before the referral is made.
