Executive Coaching/Anger Management for Physicians™

New “disruptive physician behavior’ standards create conflict among hospital administration and medical staff.

Hospital administrators and doctors nationwide are experiencing problems in establishing and implementing the new JACHO standards for “disruptive behavior” for physicians. Physicians are appropriately concerned over any damage to their future careers as the results of having been referred by their credential committee, physician well being committee or any other disciplinary unit or hospital administration for “disruptive behavior”. Therefore, they have argued forcefully for all types of written assurances to protect themselves from risk.

One of the consequences of this squabbling is the delay in the implementation of these new standards. Some of the new policies appear to stall actions against any physician accused of disruptive behavior for at least six months by requiring the physician to participate in a survey in which others in his specialty area are asked to respond to a series of questions regarding his or her demeanor in relation to patient care and interpersonal interaction. The goal is to see if the physician is able to make changes in his or her behavior without intervention. If positive changes are seen, the survey is repeated in three months and a decision is made to dismiss the action or to order anger management.

What is clear so far is that psychological/psychiatric intervention is not seen as an acceptable remedy for disruptive behavior by any of the new policies, which are being adopted. All physicians routinely reject any record of intervention, which implies treatment for mental or nervous disorders. This is a reasonable strategy since anger is not a pathological condition and therefore not responsive to psychotherapy or psychotropic medication.

The most reasonable and the most widely acceptable intervention is one which is offered on-site or at a neutral location with an opportunity for the physician to receive an intensive assessment for stress, anger, communication styles, emotional intelligence and motivation to change. The Coaching offered must include skill enhancement in these same areas.

Anger Management, a Neglected Topic in Gang Intervention

In many U.S. cities and some rural areas, gangs are exploding and causing alarm to residents as well as local, state, and federal politicians. The most typical response to gang violence is to increase law enforcement devoted to cracking down on youth criminals. Prosecuting attorneys have used creative approaches to gang intervention, including injunctions and the enforcement of housing codes.

Prevention is generally an after-thought with limited resources and little tracking of the success or lack of success of these efforts. Strategies to frighten at-risk youth such as “scared straight” and D.A.R.E. have been funded for many years with few results.

Legitimate anger management classes, which include pre- and post-tests, curricula, client workbooks, DVDs and other teaching material actually work. These courses, when taught by Certified Anger Management Facilitators, lead to a decrease in person-directed violence, an increase in empathy, an increase in precision learning, as well as an increase in self-esteem and academic achievement.

The state of Texas is considering making anger management a required course for all middle and high school students. If this measure becomes law, there will be a decrease in aggression and violence in adult life. Some school districts in Texas are already using anger management with considerable success.

In addition to skill enhancement in anger management, stress management, communication and emotional intelligence, anger management classes can be used in lieu of suspension, expulsion, or school transfer. Courses for parents can, and should, be available through adult schools for parents of at-risk youth. Finally, anger management should be used in all gang prevention programs and substance abuse programs.

Reflections on the Anger Management Certification Training

T. L. "Tom" Wentz, Ph.D., C.A.M.F., C.E.C., owner and Executive Director of Anger Management/Executive Coaching for Professionals, Palm Desert, CA completed three days of adult and adolescent anger management, and emotional intelligence training in Santa Monica, CA this past week. The training was led by Mr. George Anderson, MSW, BCD, CEAP. Mr. Anderson, Executive Director of Anderson and Anderson Anger Management/Executive Coaching for Physicians, Brentwood, CA is the world's largest provider of anger management training and an internationally recognized expert and facilitator of anger management and executive coaching for physicians.

"Mr. Anderson's training is truly exceptional. He provides more than just his curriculum on anger and stress management, communications skills, and emotional intelligence. Mr. Anderson leads by his years of experience and example as well as provides 'lessons within lessons', especially concerning the constant and sensitive application of the principles of emotional intelligence throughout the training! The trainees included professionals from the Brooklyn DA's Office in New York City and social workers, psychotherapists, ministers and educators. The backgrounds, diversity, and individuality of the participants would have been daunting for the most experienced trainer, yet Mr. Anderson, through his knowledge and expertise, was able to convert the most stoic of personalities and transcend individual differences to create a living lesson of the value of emotional intelligence to demonstrate why George Anderson is the 'Storm's Quiet Eye'."

An Introduction to Emotional Intelligence for Anger Management Facilitators, Clinicians, MFTs and LCSWs

Emotional intelligence is a learned ability needed to understand, use, and express human emotions in a healthy and skilled manner. Emotional experience and expression are unique to each person. No one else in the world thinks, expresses feelings, chooses behaviors and acts in the exact same way as you do or as we do. Consequently, any learning model for developing emotional intelligence must address this unique human quality.

The Success Profiler addresses this uniqueness in positive and direct ways. Long-term and continuing research has confirmed that self-assessed personal and emotional skills are vital to academic achievement, effective and supportive relationships, career success, productivity, and personal health. The heart of The Success Profiler is the Personal Skills Map, a positive assessment of 13 emotional skill areas and positive personal change that is organized around key areas that are integral to success, satisfaction, and happiness.

Part One Relationships and Interpersonal
Communication

Part Two Personal Leadership

Part Three Self Management in Life & Career

Part Four Intrapersonal Development

This one day course is experiential rather than didactic. It will include the assessment of all participants and The Personal Success System skill development workbook. This training provides each participant the opportunity to learn first hand about his/her strengths and weaknesses, and helps to begin building on the information learned from this assessment.

This training will be offered as continuing education for providers in Los Angeles County, as well as those from all parts of the United States, who want to remain on our L.A. County court referral list and our website. The date for this training is May 27, 2008.

Practicing Anger Management: Important Message for Anderson & Anderson® Anger Management Providers

Anderson & Anderson® has trained over eight thousand persons/entities to provide anger management classes for court referrals, employees mandated by H.R. departments, and those of the general public who realize that they will benefit by being enrolled in an anger management program. As part of our live training program, we provide the trainee with information that will be useful for them when they are ready to begin offering the services. We stress the importance of treating the business aspect of your position in the same way you treat your facilitating (or teaching) of our anger management curriculum.

It makes a great difference whether or not one receives referrals, because referrals provide the lion’s share of income. Therefore, it is of extreme importance that the provider considers more than just the financial investment he or she makes when taking the training, purchasing all the necessary materials needed for clients, and maintaining status on the court referral list and the Anderson & Anderson® website.

Providers must be willing to market themselves as well as the Anderson & Anderson® brand when reaching out to the public. They should market their practice via the internet on a daily basis, and maintain a professional looking web site. They should be creative when exploring different ways of reaching out to new clientele. Most importantly, they must be willing to work with the needs of the client without compromising their own business strategy and the Anderson & Anderson® Brand. Anderson & Anderson® has routinely provided a one-day training focused on marketing and expanding the anger management practice. Please call our office or send myself or George Anderson an e-mail (greynotions@aol.com or georgeanderson@aol.com) with any requests for this training. Provided that enough people are interested, we will schedule a date and time convenient for all of those who wish to attend.

The 10/90 Rule

10% of Life are the happening events; 90% are our responses!

So here we are living our lives and responding to those events which affect us. All of those happening events are stresses brought to bear on our very being. 10 % of life represents all of those happening events. 90% of our lives represents our responses to those stresses.

It is important to understand that stress is like an energy that pushes us. Sometimes that energy is very positive. For example, when we get a raise or promotion at work we feel great. Similarly, when anything good happens to us we are energized and uplifted.

But what happens when that stress is what I call a negative stress. Then we are obligated to respond. There are times when that negative stress is over-whelming such as a severe injury or illness and it’s difficult to respond. Our response here is to seek help.

And other times our responses are angry responses, which many of us exhibit as the result of a real or perceived aggression against us, very often leading to inappropriate behavior, rage, physical or verbal abuse and difficult relationships.

Anger Management Training will teach you how to handle your Stress and Anger responses while also helping you to improve your Communication skills and your Emotional Intelligence or your understanding of the meanings of what others are saying in your relationships.

If you have recurring episodes of aggressive, angry behavior, you should seek Anger Management Training before it’s mandated by a court of law. It will improve your life, your health and your relationships.
