Alternative Uses For Executive Coaching/Anger Management
Anger management coaching, based on the four popular domains of emotional intelligence, is being effectively used for marriage and divorce relationship/mediation issues. Anger Management/Executive Coaching was originally developed by Anderson & Anderson™ for use in the assessment and intervention of JCAHO defined “disruptive physicians." Individual Executive Coaching/Anger Management clients are beginning to request couple coaching for skill enhancement, in self-awareness, self-control (anger management), social awareness and relationship management. These are the four domains of Emotional Intelligence and do not denote psychopathology or marital conflict. Mental Health Professionals who discover that their clients are exhibiting deficits in self-control, stress management, empathy or assertive communication are referring these patients for this new non-psychological intervention of Executive Coaching/Anger Management.
Couples seen in dyad Emotional Intelligence Coaching are each evaluated using the same comprehensive instruments that are used with individuals. The same client workbooks , DVDs and ancillary skill enhancement material used for individual clients are being successfully used with couples. Many of these clients have been unsuccessful with the traditional channels of marriage counseling or psychotherapy.
In contrast to counseling or psychotherapy, coaching for Emotional Intelligence or Anger Management does not carry the same stigma currently experienced by those who are patients being treated for nervous or mental disorders. Rather, it is a skilled-based intervention designed to enhance emotional intelligence.

Anger Management vs. Conflict Resolution
Even the Internet needs help in learning the differences between Anger Management
and Conflict Resolution. Anger and Anger Management is related to useless anger. This anger can be directed towards persons or property. It does not require a dispute between one or more persons.
In contrast, Conflict Resolution relates to disputes between one or more persons. The Resolution of the conflict requires that all participate in resolving the dispute. The dispute may or may not involve anger.
Conflict Resolution is generally provided by trained Mediators who are often Attorneys who specialize in Mediation or Conflict Resolution. Most cities have free Mediation Services offered through its City Attorney or District Attorney's Office.Anger Management is much newer than Conflict Resolution. It is a class or individual coaching designed to teach skill enhancement in anger management, stress management, assertive communication and emotional intelligence or empathy.

When Is It Time For Anger Management?
If Anger Management is seen as a program to increase skills in Self-Awareness, Self-Control, Social Awareness and Relationship Management, any time is the right time for skill enhancement in these areas. Generally, most self-referrals to Anger Management Programs are persons who are highly interested in skill enhancements in these areas. It is worth remembering that anger is a normal human emotion, which is exerienced by everyone from time to time.
Here are five specific signals that will tell you when your anger is creating problems for you.
1).When it is too frequent. There are many situations for which becoming angry is justified and natural. But, we often get angry when it is not necessary or useful. It is important to distinguish between the times when it is alright to be angry and when getting angry isn’t a wise idea.
2).When it is too intense. Anger is something that occurs at different levels of intensity. A small or moderate amount of anger can often work to your advantage. High degrees of anger rarely produce positive results and may damage your own physical health.
3).When it lasts too long. When anger continues over time, you maintain a level of arousal or stress that goes beyond normal limits. When anger does not go away, your body’s systems are prevented from returning to normal levels, which makes it easier to get angry the next time something goes wrong. Sometimes, it becomes impossible to resolve.
4).When it leads to aggression. Aggressive acts are likely to result in trouble for you. When you feel you have been abused or treated unfairly, you may want to hurt the person who has offended you. Verbal aggression, like calling someone a name, is not helpful and often leads to a cycle of increasing aggression.
5).When it destroys work or personal relationships. When your anger interferes with doing a good job or makes it hard for people to relate to you, then it becomes a problem. Anger Management is by far, the most appropriate response for developing skills to manage all of the situations mentioned above.

Anger Management Vital To Promoting Good Health
A recommendation of a recent mental health report from the Office of the U.S. Surgeon General (U.S. Public Health Service) is its emphasis on prevention and health promotion. The Surgeon General, in a clarion call for prevention initiatives, stresses the importance of psycho- educational interventions in the community for a range of problems. Anger Management
is one such intervention, notable for its wide applicability to a variety of constituencies for both primary and secondary prevention. For example, Anger Management techniques are needed desperately by teachers, probation officers, correctional staff, counselors, community leaders and parents.
Community sites such as schools, social service organizations, churches, libraries, and social clubs provide convenient venues for workshops and classes. For some individuals, improved health may be an important incentive for participation. A recent study at John Hopkins University found that most men who experienced heart attacks or strokes had problems managing anger. Thus unhealthy anger has serious health implications and needs to be addressed proactively.

The Airline Industry Needs Anger Management
While Jet Blue made the news for the explosive behavior of one of its’ Flight Attendants, it is hardly alone in the need for Organizational Anger Management for employees. Few industries are as stressful as the daily tensions associated with flying. Anger is a normal human emotion which is problematic when it is too intense (as indicated in the Jet Blue incident), when it occurs too frequently, when it lasts too long, when it leads to person or property directed aggression or violence, when it destroys interpersonal relationships or when is leads to health issues.
The most commonly associated causes of anger are stress, tension, fatigue, anxiety, depression and frustration. Since the tragedy of 9/11, flying worldwide has become overwhelmingly stressful worldwide. In contrast to many other stressful industries including banking and medicine, the Air Line Industry has been slow to recognize the value of Anger Management Coaching or Organizational Anger Management for its work force. Certified Anger Management Facilitators are well trained to offer intervention for workplace violence prevention as well as coaching for anger management and emotional intelligence for customer service staff. Programs include Pre and Post Tests as well as skill enhancement in Self-Awareness, Self-Control, Social Awareness and Relationship.

Anger Management Coaching And Classes Are Recession-Proof
In spite of the recession in the U.S., Certified Anger Management Providers are doing well and good. There are a number of reasons for the continued surge in the request for anger management services. One is supply and demand, which relates to the limited number of Certified Anger Management Providers in the U.S.
A second reason is the standard use of Pre and Post Tests by all Certified Anger Management Providers. Increasingly, businesses, industry and governmental agencies are demanding Evidenced Based Programs for anger management as opposed to counseling, psychotherapy or process groups. Pre and Post Tests are the only reliable means of determining the success or lack of success of any type of intervention including anger management.
Additionally, anger management offered by Certified Anger Management Providers is more than managing anger. Coaching or classes offered by Certified Anger Management Facilitators (CAMF) are based on Emotional Intelligence. Emotional Intelligence is a relatively new concept which is related to the ability to understand one’s own feelings and behavior as well as the capacity to sense the feelings and needs of others and to utilize this information in a way that enhances interpersonal relationships.
In addition to anger management, these programs teach skill enhancement in the following Emotional Intelligence areas:
Self-awareness
Self-control
Social Awareness
Relationship Management
Self-Esteem
Interpersonal Assertion
Stress Management
Empathy
Time Management
Structured lessons and exercises using client workbooks, DVDs, CDs, Posters and role-play are used to practice enhancement skills in all of the areas listed above.
Most of the current clients in anger management coaching/classes are employees including attorneys, physicians and executives who are referred by their employers for assistance in improving their interpersonal relationships at work. Human Resource Managers, Physician Well-Being Committees, Risk Management Officers as well as Executive Directors are the key sources of referrals to most anger management programs. Wives and significant others are a second source of referrals followed by self-referrals for non-work related issues. Court mandated referrals are, in fact, the smallest category of persons referred to anger management classes. The primary purpose of employee referrals to Certified Anger Management Providers is to protect the organization from hostile work environment lawsuits and to increase workplace performance and morale.
Anger Management is lucrative because it works.

Anxiety And Depression Often Precede Anger
Anxiety and depression are both common symptoms of a wide range of psychiatric disorders. In addition, anger and depression are discrete disorders that are commonly seen in most mental health settings.
While anxiety and depression are not commonly associated in popular publications relative to anger management, anxiety or depression often precede feelings of anger, rage, hostility and or stress.
Anger Management coaching or small group classes that use Emotional Intelligence as the prime modality for assessment and intervention indirectly address both of these important contributing factors in skill enhancement for self-awareness, self-control, social awareness and relationship management. These are the four concepts of emotional intelligence that are the focus of Daniel Goleman’s publications on Emotional Intelligence.
Emotional Intelligence assessments, which include a Pre and Post Test, in conjunction with a structured client workbook as well as ancillary training material, are the most effective models of intervention for persons experiencing problems in recognizing and managing anger, recognizing and managing stress, mastering assertive communication and increasing empathy and emotional intelligence.
Successful clients almost always show a decrease in anxiety and depression following skill enhancement coaching in Emotional Intelligence. This is an area that deserves scholarly research.
